Coaching Conversations (ICC Commercial Plumbing Inspector)

These are actual coaching conversations from our online ICC Commercial Plumbing course.

Our coaching system is simple and convenient. You can easily ask a question anywhere in the course. There's no need to open your email program or go to another page.

Question, when taking the P2 test, I am finding it easier to reference the IPC table of contents first which will direct me to the correct section within the code with the answer since the test is timed and only have about 2.5 minutes per question, your thoughts? Just looking for a test taking system, as there is no way anyone can do this with knowing where to look
Jaden Perry
Al,
There is nothing wrong with the method you describe. That said, it isn't recommended to start at the IPC TOC on every question. Keep in mind:
The test prep course is formulated to provide general knowledge of the IPC. There are only 15 Chapters, and of those chapters the bulk of the questions come from 10 Chapters. If you have a reasonable base understanding of the course modules, you likely can jump directly to the obvious chapter.
It is estimated that ~25% of the questions can be answered without referring to the code. At least for the first pass. If you manage your test time wisely, you will have an opportunity to double check these questions prior to completing the test.
The practice tests are modeled after the actual inspector's test. If you have been successful with the practice tests, then you will be well prepared for the actual test.
All of the IPC Chapters follow similar organization of information. General information comes first, then materials discussion, then specific discussions. For example, if a question is asked about cleanouts, the first clue is that this will take you to Sanitary Drainage (Chapter 7). This is a specific discussion, so you know you are somewhere in the middle of Chapter 7. That is potentially 15-30 seconds faster than starting at the TOC.
Also, don't forget there are a handful of questions related to the IFGC, so the IPC TOC will not be helpful.
The sum up here is prepare well by understanding the modules, quiz questions, and then find success by taking the practice tests. Whatever specific methods you use to perform these steps will prepare you to take the test.
Thanks for the question.

This question and answer doesn't make sense

In the user's note at the beginning of IPC Chapter 08, the verbiage identifies that all of the strategies for conveying special wastes is for the purpose of avoiding contamination of the potable water supply. This is what is meant by using the "main idea" phrase in the quiz question.
Thank you
Hi there, I have questions on 100-year 1-hr rainfall maps and Appendix B. Which gives accurate answer for the exam? Can i use Appendix B to answer questions on exam? Also, can you show me a way to look up the number using figures in chapter 11? thanks
Jaden Perry
When you know the specific city, Appendix B is the most accurate tool for determining 100-year, 1-hour storm water design criteria. Appendix B (and all materials contained in the IPC code book) are available for use during the exam.
If you are trying to look up information for a certain region (counties will be easiest) you use Figure 1106.1 (on multiple pages) similar to a topographic map. Locate the city, county, or region on the map, and then determine the values of the topographic lines on either side of the location in question. Then you use value of the lower number.
For instance, Denver, Colorado. It lies between 2-inches and 2.5-inches. So the 100-year, 1-Hour storm water total for Denver would be 2-inches, according to Figure 1106.1.
Note, however, that when you consult Appendix B, the value listed for Denver is 2.4-inches. The best practice is to check both sources and utilize the higher of the two.
thank you for the detailed explanation Jaden
